After graduating from Riverside Brookfield High School in 1960 Hal Burke enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January 1961. In 1964, Hal had the honor of serving aboard Fletcher Class Destroyer USS The Sullivans DD-537 (named for the five Sullivan brothers), that was awarded Nine Battle Stars in WWII and Two Battle Stars in the Korean War. Upon the honorable completion of Hal’s active duty in the Navy he attended and graduated from Morton Junior College. In 1972, he received his Bachelor of Science in Commerce Degree from DePaul University, Chicago, IL.
After his 45 year career in Sales & Marketing, developing new products and business for suppliers in the national retail drug, grocery and mass merchandisers, he left the corporate world in 2016.
Hal’s a member of the Alexander Bradley Burns Post 80 American Legion in Downers Grove, and former Editor of their monthly newsletter, and was elected to the Board of Directors - Squadrons & Shipmates in 2019. Squadrons & Shipmates is an organization of Navy, Marine Veterans and Air Groups that served on Aircraft Carriers.
Since 2012 Hal and Nancy have hosted the Chicago Tin Can Sailors (DesVets) Bull Session.
In retirement, Hal’s pursuing a new mission in motivational presentations of historical military campaigns and fallen heroes
